When was the last time you hitch-hiked?Have you ever hitch-hiked?
I have.
At first I hitched locally, up and down the El Camino.
Then I met a fellah named Ken Page, who by that time had hitched back and forth from the East Coast to the West numerous times, and he suggested a Northwest trip, and I joined him.
Throughout the Northwest we hitched, from California through Oregon and Washington and Idaho and Nevada and back.
Then, I hitched my first long distance trip, solo, from Mountain View to New Mexico and back.
Then I took the Ultimate Trip, just me and my pup Breeze, from Mountain View to Rochester, New Hampshire, to be Ken's best man,and back. All the way across the entire United States...and back. Solo. The year was 1978. Or '77. Things are foggy.
Anyhoo....today I attempted to hitch-hike from Freeport (ten miles upriver) back home. It didn't work. Called Autumn. She brought me home.
And so it goes.

I hitched frequently from Boone, NC to Durham, NC and back. It was a three plus hour ride and I had a girl there and no ride.
Then I met a girl named Gigi from Charlotte and I hitched back and forth from Boone to Charlotte.
It was all in the mid to late 70s.
I used to streak too. Quite proud I was.
I just got the original letter that I sent my mom from California telling her that I finally, after 7 years with a licence, bought a car, a 1962 Buick Le Sabre for $200.
Dated December 7, 1976
Hitched quite a bit. Farthest was from Stockton or Tracey memory not so good to Yosemite when Bart's car broke down. Cold ride in the back of a p-up in the winter even in Ca.
The common mode of transportation, hitch hiking, is pretty much a thing of the past. There was a time when many of us stuck out our thumbs for the shear joy of the freedom it afforded us and the fun of meeting new people and seeing new places. I hitched hwy 49 just to see the country, with no destination in mind other then to see those california foothills. When I think of it I have hitched through more states then I have driven through. Some drivers were amazeing, kind, fun and helpful, some were downright scarry, but mostly they were good people. From the housewife in Cheyenne, WY, who took me home to cook me lunch to the trucker at four corners who picked me up on a friday night and said "boy, get in this truck befor these injuns kill ya" (I really do think he saved my life). It was an experience, it was an era, it was the 60's and the early 70's and it was good.
